The Watcher - designated Watcher 13 - had been assigned the task of  keeping track of the Corellian League.  This, in turn, increased the imperials trust in her work and they didn't ask questions when she fed them misdirected bits of information where the Shetoshoy clan was involved.

Now her attention was on this singular item which kept finding its way into the intel traffic - a Gree artifact.  Aay'han, Watcher 13, was all over this traffic.  She had enough intercepts to place the artifact on Makeb, Oogurobb's lab.  It appeared that the purpose of the artifact was some kind of prototype transport device, at least according to the records in Oogurobb's databases.  Some schematics, some speculation on the transport / teleportation mechanisms, speculation on related destinations.

She communicated what she knew to Ghanikavhett, along with some speculation.  After all, it could be very valuable to the right people and having a proven Warlord retrieve an item was usually a pre-indicator of success.

Olrac was furious.  The artifact had vanished from Tatooine, Agnost had no leads, and the Republic had carried the day in the attack.  This coupled with the failure of the operation on Alderaan had placed him in a foul mood.

Then his datapad beeped.  He scanned the message, then went back and read it fully.  As he read, his anger diminished and he started to smile.  Makeb.  Well, he'd planned on expanding Cabal operations to Makeb.  Why a Watcher was sending classified information to a neutral Clan was unknown, but his own agents had intercepted the contents of the message prior to it being sent.  He would keep this conflict of loyalty to himself for now, it would be a useful source of information in the future.  For now, he started transmitting orders to both the Cabal and Beskar.  Time to make up for a series of losses.

Dutch was almost in shock.  He had been sure that when Olrac returned, Dutch should have received the disciplining of a lifetime.  He was so certain, that he had cybernetic medical personnel standing by.  When Dutch saw Lord Olrac arrive, he was even more certain that his punishment would be severe.  Olrac looked absolutely outraged.  And then, a strange thing happened.

Olrac strode right past Dutch without so much as a greeting, insult or even any acknowledgement that Dutch existed.  The dark energy rolled off Olrac's person in waves.  The dark energy alone was almost enough to make Dutch recoil.  Olrac went straight to his chambers and closed the doors, trusted bodyguards standing watch.

It was, Dutch surmised, not a good time to suggest an interview with the pensive Lord Olrac...

Dutch turned and headed to the guest quarters he had been assigned.  Perhaps he could get in touch with Agnost and see if anything new had developed.

Kandoo had offered the use of the briefing room in his ship, The Desiccant Watershed.  As someone who had worked with both ends of the House Crystal, Kandoo’s ship offered a neutral meeting place.  It also had enough space for the entire assemblage and reasonable protection against listening devices.  At 13 parsecs, deep space also allowed some protections against unwanted intruders.

The drill had been Kandoo’s design.  He would send coordinates by encrypted sub-light to one attendee.  Make the pickup, send new coordinates and move to pick up the next guest.  This was done until all 16 invited members and one guest were on board.  It left a lot of ships scattered across space, but the presumption was that each ship’s crew would begin moving the ships around the galaxy to avoid detection, or capture.

Dutch moved to the front of the room, taking charge of the meeting.  “By now, we must assume that any data we have is also held by both imperial and republic forces.  I was short-sighted to have failed in picking up Olrac’s spies and having them eliminated.  Likewise, Cymstar was unaware of my true identity and shared information with his allies in the Corellian League.  Additionally, research by all parties involved has increased the value of the artifact and substantial forces are being committed to its acquisition.  The battle on Tatooine demonstrated that.  Mickey, please provide us with your briefing.”

Dutch stepped away from the podium and the young Chiss operative stepped forward. With her, was another, unfamiliar Chiss operative.  Mickey spoke.  “I would like to introduce the team to Aay’han, codename Watcher 13.  Her loyalties are with the Chiss, as are mine.  At the current time, she is assigned to imperial intelligence, but also has resources available to her from the Sheteshoy clan.   Watcher 13?”

Aay’han stepped to the podium, professional, confident.  “Thank you, Mickey – is it?  Yes, well,” she nodded to Kandoo who was running the presentation system from the back of the room.  A schematic of an HK-51 droid came up on the screen.  “Since the original research performed by Lord Deutschekastel, the chatter surrounding the artifact has been voluminous.  Here are the things that we know:

1.   The artifact is real and is of Gree design.
2.   Originally thought to be a prototype device of unknown use or carrier, being transported on the Endar Spire for engineering study.
3.   We have now confirmed that the device was meant to be a component of the HK-51 Assassin droid.  Turn the holograph, please.  It fits in this attachment portal.
4.   We have additionally confirmed that the purpose was as a teleportation capable device, a Gree design using technology similar to that found in the Rakata units on Belsavis.
5.   Based on comm chatter, we believe the artifact has been transported to Dr. Oggurobb’s lab in Toborro’s palace, Makeb.

There are also associated speculations:

1.   That the original artifact was initially on-board the Fatality, which contained a cargo of these HK-51 droids.
2.   That the specific artifact we seek was in the possession of Revan when he was taken prisoner by Bastila Shan.
3.   That the device came on-board the Endar Spire by either Shan or Carth Onasi, who were the only members to be aware of the ‘re-programmed’ Revan’s presence aboard the Spire.
4.   That depending on the condition of the artifact when it is recovered, it could be activated once placed in an HK-51 housing.
5.   That this device would have given an HK-51 assassin droid teleportation capability between force heavy worlds and perhaps might have been tied to the Kwa Infinite Gate system of interstellar transport.

This ends my briefing, thank you.”
Watcher 13 stepped away from the podium.  What she had left out here, she thought to herself, but had passed on to Ghanikavhett was the her analysis showed the device might work independently of the HK-51 housing.  That information was for the Sheteshoy clan, alone.

Dutch returned to the podium. “Thank you, Watcher 13, for your detailed briefing and analysis.  I originally thought that this artifact, or device could help us free Alderaan from occupation.  However, I am convinced now, rather, that it must be captured and contained.  As I said at the start of the meeting, we must assume that knowledge of the artifact and its current location are known to all.  With the force’s help, we can hope that the contents of this meeting are secret.  Meaning no disrespect to our host, we should be prepared that today’s contents become public also.  We must now turn our attention to the assault of Toborro’s palace, the breaching of Dr. Oggurobb’s lab. You each know what you have to do.  Kandoo will disperse us each to our own ships.  We will meet again on Makeb.  Please report in when you make planetfall.  You are all dismissed.”

The strike teams seemed to form somewhat organically.  The experienced leaders such as Cymstar, McTavish, Tintagel and Agnost – Dutch’s sons and daughter taking in the younger recruits.  The hotshot gunslinger Elodian, the fierce Sith Cymrojo, the sniper Cym’avignon, all eager for action, but as yet untested at this level.  The two Chiss, Mithic and Mickey, brother and sister working with the beautifully dangerous bounty-hunter Elysiliandra and the Chiss guardian Mic’ymro’cinnit.  Dutch was surprised that their family had grown to so many dedicated, loyal associates.  They would be a powerful force, but only the leadership had been tested.  Again, Dutch asked himself, would they be enough?

A bug had managed to slip through the scans, due to the fact that it was inert until the holoprojector was activated.  On the other end, Olrac listened with two of his subordinates.  He smiled at what he heard.  The Crystal family was unaware that Olrac's agents were all ready massing at a staging point on Makeb.  Eliminate the Hutts, capture the artifact, and wipe out the traitors in one sweep.  It was going to be a good day for the Empire.

Judas' spies had managed to slip an infiltrator aboard when Cymstar was picked up.  She managed to slip into the crawlspace above the conference room after it had been swept for bugs, and she listened to the conversation with great interest.  The agent knew Kandoo wouldn't allow her to be harmed, she was connected to Carliste.  There was a deep space terminal in the captain's cabin of a standard Thunderclap, the infiltrator headed there to transmit the recording of the briefing to the Empty Night.  Judas was finally going to get his hands on Dutch, and with him would come information.  Enough to make the various setbacks worthwhile.

Ghanik listened on his helmet feed as Aay'han filled him on on the briefing details. "I have given the House Crystal my brief on the artifact. They currently know what we do, minus the important parts. I was informed that the meeting was completely secure, but you know as well as I that aruetii ideas of security are far different than ours. I gave the impression I am allied with the Chiss, but whether they believe that or not is immaterial. I look forward to seeing the Clan in action once again. 13 out."

Action, yes. It would be good to be back in the fight for a bit.

Cymstar looked at Tintagel.  His force-sense was signalling danger.  Tintagel nodded, almost imperceptibly.  That meant that Dutch had been correct, the information in this briefing was leaking out and there would be great danger for all at Makeb.  Cymstar could not make out the complete sense of the danger, whether it was to the team, a sub-team or an individual.  But it was real, and close.

Cymstar swept his eyes around the room.  Sometimes, he thought, the force is an annoyance.  Now he was going to have to assess whether the threat was from within, or without.  Without would be better as it would mean he could still trust all of the collected members of the team.  Watcher 13?  Was there an agenda there which she had not made transparent?

Cymstar tried to sort out the life forces, kind of a force-based headcount, but his skills were not yet that refined.  In the heightened state of activity, it was hard to sense where one person's force presence ended and another began.  At his current stage of training it seemed as if they all blended at the edges.

Agnost looked his way, and gave a small nod.  He felt it too.  Even McTavish gave Cymstar a glance and nod, though Cymstar couldn't be sure if it was latent force sensitivity in his brother, or that aggravating ability McT had of "just knowing" where to be, where to look, where danger would come from.  Whatever it was, it had saved his brother's skin more than once according to the stories he had told.

Desperation was driving them all. The family Crystal desperately wanted to return to Alderaan and make things right.  To throw off the occupiers, to clean up the planet's messy political situation, regain their estate and property and return life to normal.  Except that is not how life happened.  Life would never be normal for this family again, even if they were able to accomplish all that was in their hearts.  The galaxy had changed, they each, individually, had changed.  No way to go back, only forward. And the way forward was difficult to see, always in motion...

The twi'lek infiltrator activated the holoterminal in the captain's quarters and keyed one of the Silver Queen's codes.  In a matter of seconds, a link was established and the briefing was sent.  Seconds after that, the terminal shut down and alarms started blaring.  Chaessa turned to face the door and pulled out her lightsaber.

Agnost left the briefing room, trying to follow his force-sense warning.  He moved in a colder / warmer pattern, not able to clearly discern the exact location in the ship.  He had wandered in front of the captain's quarters when Kandoo and Tintagel joined him.  Tintagel felt it too, now, and drew her lightsabers. Agnost turned to face the door and then the alarms all started blaring.

Tintagel was temporarily distracted by the coincidence of it, but Agnost knew he had found his quarry.  He yanked open the door, spotted the twi'lek with lightsaber in hand and acted.  The lightning arced out of his fingertips and threw the twi'lek back against the far wall.  Agnost advanced on the stowaway, his eyes drawn tighter, he menace toward her radiated from his force-presence.  Before he got to the door hatch, Kandoo stepped in between the sorcerer and the twi'lek.

"No!", Kandoo stated forcefully, and placed his hand firmly in Agnost's chest.  Agnost kept the pressure on Kandoo's restraining arm, but throttled his anger and restrained himself from dealing directly with Kandoo's insolence.  Kandoo was a special project of his father's and out of respect for Dutch, Agnost would yield, but grudgingly and giving warning through body language to the large trooped in the doorway.

The alarms cut out.  Dutch walked slowly to the hatchway entrance, with a sniper and two bounty-hunters in a protective triangle around him. "Why, Kandoo?" was all the patriarch asked the young trooper.

"That small lapel pin on the left collarbone position on her tunic, sir.  It's a Sand Panther.  She is associated with Carliste Creek, sir.  Probably the only other person in the galaxy besides you whom I would put myself in danger to defend."

Agnost had calmed down now and gave place to his father.  Dutch stepped forward, passed Kandoo and into the captain's quarters.  "All right, then, young lady.  The brave trooper had spoken on behalf of your benefactor.  Perhaps you could enlighten us as to why the transmission detection alarms went off after our meeting concluded?  Kandoo feels he owes you loyalty and defense.  I cannot promise that the remainder of my hair-trigger friends will feel so inclined." Dutch walked cautiously over to the captain's workstation chair. "Do be so kind as to extinguish your lightsaber, would you?  Consider a sign of your good faith in Kandoo's defense of you.  We are all terribly anxious to hear what you have to say."

Dutch felt no warning sense.  As a practical matter, the threat from the young Jedi was limited - only Dutch was in the room, Kandoo at the door.  So Dutch fall, there was little hope the twi'lek would survive the remaining 14 members of the team - even if Kandoo decided to defend her.  And, if Dutch was dead, he would not feel any pangs of guilt at Kandoo's demise.  If, on the other hand, Dutch's sense was correct, then perhaps all would walk away from this encounter better-informed friends...

Chaessa grinned at the Sith before her, and kept her lightsaber right where it was.

"You have a very condescending tone, Duke Undara.  But then I suppose when one is raised among the Alderaan Nobility one becomes used to certain privileges.  As to why the alarms went off, obviously it's because I sent a transmission.  The Empty Night wants that relic, and Judas wants to talk to you.  So they'll meet you on Makeb."

"Duke Undara", Dutch repeated distractedly.  "It has been a very long time since anyone called me by my former title.  And perhaps you are right, I've forgotten my manners.  Let me try a different approach.  Would you like to join us in the ship's mess?  Clearly, you have sufficient connections to have gotten aboard this ship undetected, until now".  Undara slowly swung his gaze over to the trooper, Kandoo, but Kandoo's face registered no emotion and his force presence was radiating only the loyalty and idealism which had been part of his makeup. "If you are willing to lower your guard, we can all have something to eat and, since Watcher 13 is still with us, you can be more properly briefed and report a full and accurate set of facts to your superiors.  What do you say?"

McTavish worked through the crowd at the door and over to Undara.  "Have you lost your mind?"

"Perhaps", responded Undara.  "But she has clearly sent all the information from the briefing already.  Who could tell whether by being just a little more open we might gain a valuable ally?  We must capture the artifact and lock it away in a safe place.  With the Fatality full of HK51 droids and this artifact able to turn them into an army of hyperspace assassin's, the artifact becomes a tool which may very likely destabilize the delicate balance between light and dark side forces.  Recall that the Rakata, when they were given an edge turned the galaxy into warzone without borders, destroying civilization back into the lost times.  It took thousands of years for the galaxy to recover.  This is much bigger than having the upper hand in restoring order to Alderaan.  We can use any allies we can persuade to agree with us, regardless of their alignment."

Undara returned his gaze to their Jedi Stowaway. "What do you say?  Shall we have lunch?"

The EVA seals had closed.  The backpack pumps had pressurized the suit and started to circulate oxygen to the helmet.  Several HUD alarms were ringing and Ghanikavhett moved a gloved hand to his opposite forearm to check the settings and close down the alarms.  The disorientation was more severe than most.  He had been reaching for something, an droid component, a tool, what was it?  But he had been on a planet.  Lush planet.  Taris?

Using his suit stabilizers, Ghanik slowed the head-over-heels rotation, tried to get some orientation.  The star patterns, they were all wrong for Taris.  They looked familiar, but he couldn't place the major planet.  How did I get here?

The pinging was incessant and irritating.  Slowly, Ghanik focused his eyes.  He was back inside his ship.  He shook his head.  Another dream?  He flipped the switch on the incoming data stream.  It was from Watcher 13.  Ah, he thought to himself, here is the prize the Sheteshoy clan had been hunting for.  Toborro's palace, Makeb.  Looks like it was going to be quite a party...

The young Jedi had been willing to close down her lightsaber and join the team in the ship's mess hall.  Despite some misgivings from his team, Duke Undara gave Chaeesa a full briefing.  His family may not have believed him when Duke had mentioned needing allies, but his research on the devastation caused by the Rakata's use of Kwa and Gree technology for their "Infinite Empire" had made Undara's blood run very cold.

Things were in a delicate balance with the Jedi and the Sith - but they were in balance.  It was becoming clearer now, that the galaxy actually needed both for that balance to be maintained.  This was the lesson of the Rakata infinite expansion and reign of terror.

Under Kandoo's care, Chaeesa was released to return to her Lt. Creek.  Likewise, Watcher 13 was dismissed to her duties.  There was something strange there, 13's vector seemed off for a return to Dromund Kaas.  But then, Undara supposed, perhaps she was covering her tracts.

Which left the problem of how many people now knew of the CrystalStryder family and their associated relations and allies.  Certainly things were very much out in the open now and that would probably set well with neither side.  The republic forces could always be persuaded that someone was coming over to the "good guys" and the imperials were always ready to believe that there were traitors and defectors on the republic side.  Those were the easy arguments.  More problematic are the independents such as the Creeks, Sheteshoys, and even the Corellian League.  Each had an agenda of their own to advance and information equated to power in advancing it.  All of the effort of vanishing from Alderaan, creating a new identity, working for the imperials even - it was all in the open now.

In a way, he was sorry that he had not been able to alert any of his children except Agnost of his plans.  But there had not been time, once captured, Undara needed to find a path forward.  It was by the good graces of the force that each had survived and that they were now reunited.  The upside was that there was no more need for subterfuge.  This collection of family and associates had grown at least strong enough to hold together under the light of truth.  Only time would tell how the course forward would unwind.

Clearing his mind and emotions, Undara headed for the conference room.  It was time to get the planning underway.  He felt he must capture the artifact and put it away.  Maybe at a future time, when war was not raging and cooler heads could come together in joint research.  But not now...

The first thing which Cymstar remembered was Duke Undara's hand gently shaking his shoulder.  His eyes focused slowly.  Spitting the grass out of his mouth, Cymstar got his hands on the ground and pushed up. Then, he rolled over and sat on the grass, leaning up against the smooth permacrete.

"What happened here?" Undara asked.

"I'm not sure that I could tell you, father."  Cymstar rubbed the neck and shoulder muscles on his right side.  "If I were to guess, I would say that I received a pretty solid stock strike when my attention was elsewhere occupied."

"Where's Mickii?"

"O-o-o-v-v-v-e-e-r h-h-e-e-r-re-e, s-s-s-i-i-r-r."  The Chiss was shivering severely. Mithic was at her side, trying to use his flame thrower on very low level to provide some heat.  He spoke to respond to the question he saw in Undara's eyes.  "She'll be alright, victim of a cryo grenade.  It should wear off shortly."

Duke Undara stood and did a slow turn, surveying the scene here in Toborro's courtyard.  Not the full blown disaster that Tatooine had been, but messy none the less.  In an interesting turn of events, it had not been the imperial or republic forces, the Corellians or Lord Olrac's crew which had been there to spring the attack.  Undara had decided to move early and attempt to avoid another messy battle such as the skirmish in the Desiccant Sea outposts on Tatooine.  It had been the Regulators.  The Hutt private army on Makeb.  Still, Undara's team was all accounted for - Cymstar and Mickii were the last two.

"Seeing that we have found you both incapacitated,  I suppose it would be too much to hope that we have the artifact in our possession?", Undara asked the two of them.

"W-we d-don't have it sir', Mickii said, starting to regain her composure and muscle control.  "We were working our way to its location when Cymstar was struck from behind, as he said.  It was indeed a stock strike.  Fairly large-sized commando, orange markings on his armor.  The Armor looked to have been carrying extensive modifications.  As Cymstar was falling to the ground, I also saw Watcher 13 on the grounds.  This leads me to conclude that the commando was Ghanikavhett Sheteshoy.  It would fit with the armor modifications, though I have never met him myself.", her voice trailed off and she fell into a faraway look in her eyes.

"What then?", Undara prompted, trying to bring her attention back to the discussion.

"Well, that is what I was trying to work through.  I moved forward to attempt to engage, but that is when I was hit with the cryo grenade.  I couldn't move, but I could still see him.  He moved to the reported location of the artifact, it looked as if he found something of interest.  His team deployed a defensive perimeter and laid down suppression fire on the incoming regulators. He picked something up and it appeared that he turned it in his hands, but then I couldn't see him any more.  His party started to split up and egress in teams of two.  That is all I could see", Mickii finished.

McTavish and Tintagel were walking back to Undara with a young Regulator.  The Regulator's eyes were
wide-open, he looked terrified. "This one was cowering behind the nearby structure", McTavish started.  Tintagel continued, " the grass shows a depression which would be about the estimated size of the artifact, but it is not here.  We have searched all of the surrounding area, but no joy."

Undara turned his attention to the Regulator.  Allowing a sufficient amount of menace into his voice, Undara began questioning the young  mercenary.  "Where is the artifact, boy?"  The young man was silent, as if the terror of whatever he had seen had also struck him dumb.  Undara slapped him hard across the cheek.  "My patience wears thin, I need and answer."

The Regulator looked Undara directly in the eyes. "It's gone, sir, gone."

"What do you mean GONE?", Undara roared.

"Just that, sir.  The commando?  He picked up the artifact, turned it in his hands.  There was a shimmering effect and he was gone.  Just like that.  Gone.  Never seen anything like it."

Undara let out a deep sigh. "Release him to Toborro, Mac.  Tintagel, spread the word to the teams to egress and disperse.  It will do no good for Alderaan if we are all taken out in a single event."  Tintagel nodded her head slightly to acknowledge the order and moved to issue the command.  McTavish escorted the Regulator to the inner courtyard, gave him a smart knock on the head and left him in a heap for Toborro's clean-up gangs to find.

All this time, Undara thought to himself, and all this effort.  Well, time to count blessings.  For the time being, the artifact was not in the hands of a faction that worried him.  Things will be different now.  It wasn't as if Duke Undara could go back to being Dutch, or move freely inside Olrac's organization.  The League was a little more forgiving in that regard.  Undara did not know enough about the Sheteshoy clan to know whether they had an agenda which would be damaging to the balance in the force.  Of course, he didn't even know where the commando was.  "Where did you go, GhanikaVhett, where did you go..."

Ghanik shook himself mentally. His mental processes were a bit fuzzy, but he gradually became aware of his surroundings. He was floating, his suit sealed for vacuum. A message indicator was blinking in his HUD. Ghanik took another moment to assess his displays. He was in a hangar, and the pressure doors were closing. He checked the message indicator: Aayhan. He flicked on the playback.

Congratulations. You have successfully activated the Senth-Cresh HK model teleporter unit. The coordinates are as we predicted, with some error in cosmic drift calculations. You are missed among your colleagues back in the League, but they have no idea of your location. We are on standby, waiting for orders.

The pressure equalized in the hangar, but gravity remained elusive. Ghanik sent out a message to Aayhan and Mirsh. Initiate Ba'slan Shev'la Coordinates as discussed. All active agents to enter recall status. Bring the A'denn Wherda. Manda'yaim is closed to us, this is now our home. Oya Aliit.
