Mirage At the Midway

Discussion Thread: http://thecorellianleague.com/index.php?topic=2494.0

The area maintenance man spits when he talks...and unfortunately for Darienne, it's worse when he flirts. Although she is nodding in approval and smiling coyly, it is taking her everything she's got not to grease this slime ball and put his remains in an outgoing transport's bulkhead. It would be more satisfying that way, but as they say in Naboo, "We've got bigger colo claw fish to fry." She makes up an excuse, leaving him with some false hope that she'll be back tomorrow and finally relieves herself his unpleasant company.

Making her way to the rear of the hangar bay is a storage room, some street graffiti is a vulgar form of street basic that reads "Sanctum of the Exalted Forever!" She's in the right place.

in the corner behind the torpedo shells is the hidden panel and the fingerprint scanner. Making sure to watch her six, she impatiently waits for the scan to finish and the door to open. As she makes her way through the passageway, the door shuts behind her and trail of floor lights leads her gradually underground a few meters. Naturally, as she makes her way in to the safe house, she's got one hand on her vibroblade and the other on her sidearm.

The main area is bigger and more elaborate than she assumed. In the center of the room was a war room sized holoterminal with life-sized projection, the communications terminal was a slicer's dream, and the walls were lined with enough blast grade ferrocrete seemingly to survive a direct assault from space. In the rear of the room was the entrance to another room.

She was told to travel light, but she assumed that she would have to resupply herself through her own means. No such concern was necessary. The munitions room was remarkably stocked with every type of arms and armor she could ever need.

Her fingers alighted on a collapsible wrist mounted mini-bow caster, "Mmm..." she purred as she tried it on for size, "you're my new best friend."

Hearing the door slide open and footsteps echo throughout the main room, she quickly loaded her new weapon. However, after 2 or 3 footfalls, she recognized the cadence. She relaxed her stance and prepared to greet her superior.

Carliste was napping in the barracks when his holocomm chimed.  A greasy looking human popped up and muttered a few phrases in Olys Corellisi, telling him he was going to have a visitor.  Carliste responded in kind and closed the channel, then heard the door to the safehouse steam open.  He checked the security consoles, then disabled the gas vents to the tunnel and picked up his blaster rifle.  It LOOKED like Darienne, but with some of the things he'd seen on the cesspits he'd been to, it paid to be cautious.  He watched the visitor enter the briefing room from one of the monitors, look around, then make a beeline for the munitions rack and fingered a wrist bowcaster.  He grinned in satisfaction, that was his girl.

He punched the release to the barracks door and it hissed open.  He saw her tense, then relax after he'd taken a few steps.  She was good at that, a skill Carliste had never fully mastered.

"Do you like your new toy, missy?" he asked, listening hard.  He couldn't identify footfalls, but voices were his gift.  If Darienne was an imposter, he'd be able to tell after a couple sentences.  "Kandoo should be here soon, be sure to leave some for him."

A job, he said.  With Lt. Creek, it is never just a "job".  Meet at these coordinates, he said.  See, this is exactly why Kandoo mostly worked alone.  Never get quite enough information when working in teams.  "Stop it, Kandoo", he said out loud to himself.  Lt. Creek was one of the few who had earned his respect, still working on the whole trust thing.

Air horns blared and Kandoo yanked the speeder sharply to the right.  As the sounds of the cursing faded behind him, Kandoo thought he at least heard something about watching where he was going.  Sometimes, you just get lost in your thoughts.  Obviously, a bad idea when driving a speeder on a bi-directional speeder path.

He at least owed it to show up after Creek saved him from being skewered by that light saber.  Besides, Creek had said the ammo was on him...

Ghan didn't care who saw him today. If he was having a bad day, so was everyone he met. The greasy mechanic only pointed to the rear of the warehouse, not bothering with any smart remarks, which probably saved him his few remaining teeth. The biometric scanner wasn't the best, probably been abused for too many years. Ghan used the pre-loaded biometrics in his glove to open the door. His boots rang out loud and clear as he strode down the hallway. His broad frame filled the doorway as he surveyed the hideout. Creek and Vohl were already present, looking over a well-stocked armory.

"So where's Crystalstryder? He should be here by now." Ghan called out, sharper than he needed to. "And where's the grub hall, I've been running on willpower alone for a week, and this had better be pretty shabla important if I've got to put my current objectives on hold. Who's in charge here anyway, since at the moment I outrank you both."

Liem strode towards the rendezvous point with a grim sense of purpose. He'd been off the grid doing private contracts for a couple months but he was ready to get back to his friends in the league. As the crowds parted in front of him, a Mandolorian in full battle armor tended to do that, Liem realized that the civilians passing him kept giving him strange looks. Deciding to be cautious rather than hurrying on to his meeting Liem walked past the warehouse he was headed to then doubled back down a side alley and saw what everyone else had been looking at. A Mando almost as big as himself was moving down the street and appeared to be in a very bad mood. The Mando walked into the warehouse Liem had been heading to and Liem followed him in cautiously even though he was pretty sure that the Mando was Ghan, a friend of the league.

The hidden door at the back of the warehouse was just beginning to close when Liem got to it so he put his palm on the scanner to keep it open that way he could slip in without the door announcing his arrival. As he came to the bottom of the stairs Liem heard Ghan talking to Carliste and Darienne. Hearing Ghan's last remark Liem responded,"I'm sure that someone. will be here soon to tell us what's going on. In the meantime I could use a new blaster rifle before we do anything. Mine had a bit of an accident on my last contract."

Ghan spun around as a voice answered behind him. "Not sure how long you've been around, vod, but you won't last much longer if you calmly wait for 'someone to tell us what's going on.' as for kit, grab as much as you can while those two aren't paying attention to the stock."

Ghan moved away from the doorway to allow Liem through. Ghan walked past the cashe of weaponry, selected a case of grenades, a spool of wire, and a medkit, then went to a corner where he could see all the doors and sat down. Ghan opened the case of grenades and began toying with the wire.

Hemza made his way through the ware house. An older man standing at the entrance of the corridor grinned and said "Welcome number five." Hemza only nodded in return, even though he did not fully understand what he meant. Most likely, that he was the fifth person to arrive.

Hemza crossed the corridor, went through the hidden door and down the stair. When he entered, his suspensions were confirmed, there were four people already in making him the fifth trooper. Hemza was only 172 inches tall and weighed little more than 80 kilograms. His build was not very imposing or intimidating, but what he lacked in size, he made up for in strength. Hemza had an unnaturally strong grip and could lift very high weights with ease. Not to mention his great speed. With his slim sleek frame, he was vary maneuverable in a firefight or hand to hand combat. Spending most of this adult life training in martial arts, he had fully mastered more than 6 style of the deadly arts.

His brown skin and facial features showed a kiffaran heritage. But his red spiked hair confused everyone who tried to guess. His father was a Corellian of the well known Ankoun family and his mother was a Kiffar of the Clan Konshi.

As he looked around the room, some noticed him, others didn't, he decided to make his presence know. He moved into the room and stood in the middle. He then relaxed his stance, put his hand behind is back and said in his smooth voice. "I am Major Hemza Ankoun. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Although Carliste was her squad leader, he had been also like a big brother to her in their travels together. Today was no different.

"I wouldn't think of taking any of your big boy toys, boss. Plus I don't think you have the girlish figure necessary to equip most of the armor that I'm putting on." He responded with an acknowledging smirk.

Kandoo came in soon after and they recognized each other with a mutual nod of respect. She wasn't sure yet what to make of Kandoo. She'd try to keep things light with him as was her nature, after all war was tough enough on all of us as it is. Yet, he hasn't fully reciprocated to her efforts. She still hoped time and a few Corellian ales after the mission would change that.

A few other troopers had come in one by one, and they were interesting to watch. A couple came in and almost immediately began bickering with each other. A kiffar came forward and introduced himself to the entire room. Seeing that the others were tending to their supplies, she put down her gear and saluted him.

What Carliste and most others didn't know was that she had taken a "harmless" peek at Celadon's files and perused the roster for this upcoming mission. She was sure the Sand Panthers would do their part, but this other rag tag group...she wasn't as sure. They were all skilled, there was no doubt about that, but chemistry and coordination are as valuable as arms and armaments...and they were certainly lacking.

Carliste grinned.  That was Darienne all right.  Kandoo showed up soon after, and Carliste formally greeted him, glad to see him again.  Then a trio of grunts arrived.  Carliste frowned at them.  The gate guard had let them through, so they must have been expected, but one carried himself with all the arrogance of a Mandalorian, and about as much tact, one announced his name like they were expected to know it, even if he was an Ankoun, and one League old guard tried and failed to act gung-ho.  Well, taking charge was his duty, might as well get to it.

"That would be me, tough guy, until my cuz and the lady's husband get here to brief us.  And I don't really give a Ryl's wagyx if you outrank me or not, I don't know you and you aren't part of our little country club, so those bars on your armor don't mean squat right now.  So until the MAD Men get here, feel free to stock up on whatever you're missing, then get acquainted.  Because something tells me you boys are going to be stuck with each other during this mess."

The Mandowannabe tried to stare him down, but Carliste stared right back unintimidated.  "Mess hall's through there, sunshine," he quipped, pointing to the barracks, "You might want to grab some caf, you're looking a little under the weather."  Darienne tried to hide her laughter with only limited success, and Carliste smiled in the major's face.

When Kandoo arrived, the room was already filling.  It was in times like this that Kandoo appreciated the beneficial results of the Tatooine invasion which left him a cybernetic composite.  As he walked into the room, Kandoo replayed the HUD holo of the Sand Panther's meeting on Ord Mantell.  The cybernetic doc had really done a wonderful job interfacing Kandoo's biological neural systems with the armor's sensors, flash storage and analytics systems.  As the replay rolled forwarded, Kandoo overlaid the images with those from the Ord Mantell meeting.

Creek checked, the girl and the big guy with the attitude and Major's bars - Kandoo could see that a fight with him could be messy at best.  No matches on the man called Ankoun.  Two others in the room - nothing on them.  Kandoo moved to a position slightly behind and to the right of Creek.  When Kandoo was on Taris - oh how he hated that place - he had bumped into a Wookie bounty hunter who had told him about their tradition of a life debt.  It had been a fascinating conversation which went into the very early hours of a very long day.  It had clicked into place something which Kandoo had wrestled with ever since he had met the first Crystalstryder on Tatooine.

The battle for Tatooine had really disturbed Kandoo's sense of trust.  He was, after all, only a teenager when it happened and the idyllic, peaceful childhood had been destroyed.  So had his physical person and his family in an uncertain status, his father killed in front of his eyes.  Even though Dutch had saved his life, Kandoo's trust in others was another casualty of that event.  So, when Lt. Creek recruited Kandoo on Tatooine, Kandoo came to respect Creek's fighting prowess.  Later, when Creek saved Kandoo's head from being broken a second time, on Corellia, Kandoo came to respect Creek's raw strength of will and care for "his" people.

But Kandoo still could not get his head around trusting others.  The wookie life debt was based on loyalty.  Kandoo could appreciate that.  Even if Kandoo did not like someone personally, even if the person needed watching, one could still be loyal.  Creek had earned Kandoo's loyalty.  Maybe he could start and hold on to hope with that.  Yes, he thought, I could regain a little hope with that.  Having processed that thought set to its logical conclusion, Kandoo felt the first stirrings of peace return to his thinking since Tatooine.

After working around the room to ensure he was completely restocked on ordinance, Kandoo again took up a position to the right rear of Creek and settled in for the briefing.

Ghan grunted at Creek. Ghan heaved the box of grenades, most of which were in various states of dismantlement, and the rest of his kit onto his shoulder and walked toward the barracks. He gave Creek a none-too-gentle push as he walked by. "Ne shab'rud'ni aruetii."

Ghan walked into the mess hall and claimed a table. He grabbed a crate of ration cubes that had been left open and began eating them two at a time. He spread out the box half-assembled grenades over the table so he could work unimpeded. The medpack was a little weak for what he wanted, but Ghan had enough supplies left in his kit to do the job. Ghan's gloved fingers scraped the bottom of the case of ration cubes. He got up and went back to the counter to look for more food.

Hemza was a soldier, raised from the day he could stand on his two feet on discipline and comradery. What he was seeing in front of him was neither. The tall wise cracking Sargent was nothing like what a CO is supposed to be, but held off the judgement because in Hemza's experience, a good CO can only be properly judged under fire.

He was one of the highest ranking troopers there, but he knew that didn't mean anything. These might be soldiers, but this is not the armed forces. In the league, skill and experience supersedes rank. This was no problem to Hemza, but he know that all newcomers have to convince the vets of their skills. Hemza moved to corner and leaned back on the wall, crossed his arms and waited for the arrival of the ones in charge.

"Udesii ner vod," Liem said to Ghan. As he moved over to the supply crates he spotted a verpine sniper rifle. "Now that is a nice piece there, I think I'll need that along with this Mando blaster rifle."  Liem then began to scan the group that was beginning to assemble.

He remembered Creek's brother Judas from previous missions he'd done with the league and hoped that this one would be as useful as his brother, it seemed they both had the trait for having a smart mouth. Liem wasn't quite sure what to make of the major that had marched in and announced himself, but Liem was even more curious about the female trooper Darienne. She seemed confident in her ability but Liem decided he'd wait until the shooting started before he made his decision about her. Settling atop a crate in the corner Liem began calibrating his sniper rifle.

As the troopers were readying their gear, the large holoprojector whizzed to life. Sensors all around the safe house activated and began taking readings of the life forms that had taken residence within. After a few seconds of processing the information, two lifesize image materialized in the center of the main room. The troopers stood at attention to the unmistakable figures of two of the League's most imposing figures. Celadon Vohl, the heavily built Jedi Commander stood patiently while Judas Creek, Captain of the Tactical Response Team, was sizing them up.

Celadon began solemnly, "Volks oensharen. It is good to see you have arrived safely and undetected. You have all read the briefing by now. You are tasked with putting an end to this situation right away. It goes without saying that none of us will tolerate an Imperial attack on one of our own, let alone our leader. We have exactly 3 hours to correct this error by eliminating our offender and recruiting his rival to our cause. At the stroke of noon, these opposing forces will make a play to end each other. We only have one shot at this or months of Intel will be wasted and another assassination attempt will most assuredly be guaranteed. The results of this Black Ops mission will affect the fate Corellian League as we know it. Do not fail."

He paused as if to quell the flood of rising emotions in to room and continued.

"As you know, the situation is complicated: two rival captains, from opposing factions, with a long history of hatred with one another. One one side, we have Cerynus Toth. Captain of the Coronet City's underground Pirate's Den. Tough as nails, a man of few words, and notoriously cruel. On the other is Drix. The boisterous, charismatic Selonian sky raider who speaks in riddles. One question stands out: which is our friend and which is our enemy? this is what you must find out today during the parade at the Midway Square, situated right on the dividing line between Republic and Imperial control of this city."

"An even more pressing question remains, my friend." The Zabrak spoke to the smuggler directly. "Which squad is best equipped to take on who? You of all people know our enemy and this situation the best. The fate of the Sand Panthers and the Razor Hounds is at your disposal."

"One last thing, I will be out of contact for a while, so your reports will either go to Judas Creek directly, or to my second Ceid Ankoun. I wish you luck."

"Cerynus is a bastard and Drix is an idiot, but they're both competant and they're both dangerous.  Between the two crews, they have the Corellian underworld locked down, nothing happens that they don't know about or run themselves.  Drix runs the guns and contraband through the Republic side of the city, Toth greased the right palms and gets a free pass from the Imps.  The other captains all answer to one or the other.

"There's a meeting today, invitation only.  It happens in a half hour, and all the major crews will be represented.  The Butcher's hosting it, so nobody will cause trouble, but tempers will still be running high.  Because my affiliation with the League is still relatively unknown, I have an invite.  Carliste," Judas addressed his cousin directly, and the big man raised a hand in greeting.

"Because you're my cousin, you'll be coming with me to the meet.  You're a Creek, and hardly squeaky clean, so nobody will ask questions."

"Just like old times, hey cuz?"

Judas' eyes seemed to smile through the hologram, even behind the mask that concealed most of his face.

"As for the rest of you, Liem Sheteshoy and Ankoun will be working together.  Ghan, your clan name will get you through most of the Imperial lines, Hemza, your family name will smooth things over with the Locals.  Liem, you're the only real League member on that team, keep the two of them in line.  Protect our interests.  Razor Hounds, you're on Toth.  My agent on the safe house has the coordinates of his base of operations.  Sand Panthers, Drix has a safe house of his own near your location, you're going there."

The door to the safe house steamed open and the greasy maintenance man entered, no longer greasy and no longer in a maintenance uniform.  He walked with a military air that was tarnished by the blaster slung low at his side.  He lifted a hand to the holograms and started passing out flimsiplast sheets to the assembled.  "These are the locations you're headed for.  Lieutenant, you'll meet your cousin outside in five.  The rest of you, dig into your targets, see what you can find.  Records, surveilance, legers, anything to point us to which is which.  Meet back here at 11:30 local time for final orders.  Good luck."

Carliste pulled Darienne aside once the assembled started gearing up.  "Be careful out there, and keep a close eye on the kid.  Selonians are tribe minded and extremely dangerous, if you're caught poking around Drix's den the rest of his family won't hesitate to kill you.  I'm pretty sure he's not with the Empire, but that doesn't mean he's one of us, so keep all eyes open."
